I’m actively encouraging non-human life in my home. I’ve whispered sweet nothings to my kraut, I’ve praised our kefir grains for working it day in and day out. And yesterday morning when my sourdough starter finally (finally) took off, Brad asked, “Did you pray over your starter?”

Um, guilty.

To all beneficial bacteria: Come to me! Hasten to me, my young little sheep, and I will shepherd you into my fermented foods where you will be so happy. Promise.
